Working with the London Borough of Lewisham and stakeholders Children’s Services and the Library Service the scheme proposals were to provide a modern library facility whilst adding the additional accommodation for a Children’s Centre and Health Consulting and Counselling rooms.

The aim was to create a vibrant community facility able to offer and deliver a range of services benefiting from collocation on the same site. The children’s centre included high levels of natural daylight and the external works to included a courtyard play area.The library included new lighting and greater self service facilities.

The existing building is Grade II listed and the works required careful a planning strategy and listed building consent. The architecture team chose to demolish a more recent side extension and provide a new contemporary glass and stone partly two storey extension to provide the additional accommodation. The existing library underwent extensive conservation including roof replacement, stone, terracotta, and brick repairs as well as the replacement of curved glass within the central dome.
