Bailey Partnership was appointed as project manager for this Nicholas Grimshaw designed award winning landmark building for a state of the art printing press and associated publishing equipment alongside ultra modern offices.
Incorporating futuristic design, the whole is contained in a glass clad envelope with curved walls following the lines of a ship. Interior design, office planning and selection of furniture were part of the design and management process. Construction work was completed by a management contractor, employing specialist contractors for each of the work packages.
The integration of the installation of the high technology, 500 tonne printing press and its associated equipment with the overall building programme was managed and co-ordinated by Bailey Partnership and we also undertook the research and preparation of waste management and furniture schedules, in addition to overall cost status and value management exercises. Our role included monitoring of expenditure, tendering, programming, interviewing of prospective tenders for works packages, co-ordination of all Client services on site, liaison with Plymouth City Council in negotiation for the purchase of the site and its services and liaison with the design team and management contractor as the Client’s Representative, and all played a vital part to produce a successful project completion.
One of the most important functions required of Bailey Partnership was the move management, involving research, scheduling and co-ordinating the relocation of Western Morning News offices and staff from the existing city centre premises to the new site on the outskirts of Plymouth, in order not to lose production time and therefore adversely affect company profitability and reputation.
Planning and completion of the project was effected successfully and enabled the Western Morning News Co Ltd to expand its business interests in the South West whilst providing second to none printing facilities for its ultimate parent company, Northcliffe Newspaper Group.
