Leading Centre for Manufacturing Opens in Exeter

Bailey Partnership has recently completed a demanding refurbishment project on behalf of the University of Exeter College of Engineering Maths and Physical Sciences in the Harrison Building. Bailey Partnership acting as Project Manager, Designer and Cost Consultant led a multi-disciplinary team to deliver new specialist engineering facilities, reception area, office spaces for up to 80 staff, specialist laboratories and meeting rooms.

The existing facilities comprised a large triple height open workshop which has been infilled at mid-height with two separate mezzanine office areas linked by a bridge in a central lightwell. One of the main difficulties encountered was working with very specialist teams on cutting edge research facilities. This meant a high degree of user consultation and design team meetings to establish a clear set of client requirements. A key aim of the project has been to provide a more commercial focus on the activities undertaken and present the CALM and X-AT team facilities to a high standard in a competitive market. The project has also been only the second refurbishment project on the University campus to date to achieve BREEAM Very Good Status.
